Detailed Description of CLLI 2010

The Institute will deliver courses that offer insight into various structural aspects and levels of specific Caribbean languages, including courses that offer an opportunity at intensive language learning with native speakers. It is designed for students already enrolled in linguistics-related academic programmes; for teachers who wish to increase their knowledge of a specific Caribbean language or languages (especially teachers of CAPE Communication Studies); and for members of the general public who are interested in the Caribbean and its languages, cultures and societies. The Institute offers the opportunity to study and examine Caribbean languages in the context within which these languages were developed and are used, be exposed to senior scholars from other UWI campuses and from other universities, and to interact with peers from other campuses and other universities.

Undergraduate students of the Institute will have the opportunity to read courses that will complement their three-year degree programme, to fast-track their undergraduate academic career, to read courses not available on their own campuses, be exposed to senior scholars from other campuses and from other universities, and to interact with peers from other campuses and other universities. Postgraduates will be able to read courses that will enhance and fine-tune their focus on their research areas.

Each course will be delivered from Monday to Thursday for three hours daily, except for the language learning courses, which will be delivered between four to five hours daily.

Undergraduate students are encouraged to register for a maximum of any three courses for credit, since the Institute is only six weeks long and very intensive.  Students may opt to audit one other course.
