Maroon Language and Culture

Lecturers: Prof. Hubert Devonish and Audene Henry

This course examines the cultural contexts within which specialised language varieties are used in Maroon communities across the Americas. The main focus of the course will be the Maroon communities of Suriname and Jamaica. These involve both ritual contexts and more generalised oral traditions. Against this background, the course focuses specifically on the linguistic features of the specialised language(s) used. It will examine ritual language, not just in speech and singing, but as this language is transmitted through alternative media such as drums and horns.

Pre-requisite: None
