Structure and Usage of Papiamentu
Lecturer: Dr. Marta Dijkhoff
The course is designed both as a foreign language course and one in the structure of the language, with an emphasis on the former. In the foreign language component, students will be trained with a focus on oral expression and comprehension. The structure element of the course involves developing a basic understanding of:
- the structure of the language including its similarities and differences to other Caribbean Creole languages;
- dialectal differences within the language, and
- issues of standardisation and instrumentalisation.
Pre-requisite: None (a knowledge of Spanish or Portuguese and/or at least Level I Linguistics would be an advantage but not required)
