Structure and Usage of Saramaccan

Lecturers: Dr Ian Robertson and Ifna Vrede

Saramaccan is one of the major creole languages in the Caribbean.  It is spoken in Suriname.  As we move towards greater regional integration, exposing students to Saramaccan will encourage students to broaden their outlook on Caribbean and CARICOM identity.  This course is designed both as a foreign language course and as one in the structure of the language.  Students will be trained in oral and written expression and comprehension as well as receive instruction in the structure of the language.  Students will be exposed to a wide range of Saramaccan texts, both written and oral, and the lyrics of Saramaccan music.  Problems of orthography, standardisation and instrumentalisation will be discussed and a deliberate effort made to provide students with exposure to the varieties of Saramaccan spoken principally in Suriname, including Matawari, an important dialect of the language.

Pre-requisite: None
