FAQ overview

What is the CLLI and what is its focus or aim?

CLLI stands for the Caribbean Language and Linguistics Institute.  The Institute's focus is on learning living and endangered Caribbean languages, as well as learning to do linguistic analysis using these languages of the Caribbean.

How do I contact CLLI?

Go to this page: http://clli.centre.uwi.edu/contact-info (in the rightmost tab) for all our contact information - snail mail address, e-mail form, telephone and fax numbers.

Where will the CLLI be held?

The opening ceremony and classes (from Monday to Thursday) will be held in the School of Humanities.

Who can apply to the CLLI?

Any University student, undergraduate or postgraduate, or lecturer can apply to the CLLI.  Non-University students or those without the course prerequisites should audit the courses of their choice (not for credit).  The CLLI welcomes Caribbean and international applicants.

Why should I attend CLLI if I am already a UWI student?

This is a great time to fast track your Linguistics or Language degree at UWI, meet lecturers and peers from all over the Caribbean and the world, learn a Caribbean language and sharpen your linguistics skills, all in six weeks!  Final year Bachelor's students and postgraduates can avail themselves of opportunities to meet staff from other UWI campuses and other universities - the networking and connections will last a lifetime, and will be important for career and research advancement.

What courses are offered?

CLLI 2010 offers courses in both language learning and linguistic analysis.  The language courses include Lokono (Arawak) and Trinidadian Sign Language (TSL).  Workshops include French-lexicon Creole (Patois).  Some of the linguistic analysis courses are phonology, syntax, sociolinguistics, dialectology and  historical linguistics (Romance language focus), and much more!  Check out our listings here: http://clli.centre.uwi.edu/courses.

What are the prerequisites to read a course at CLLI?

For students enrolled for credit, the prerequisites for all Level II courses (beginning with LING 2 in the course code) are LING 1001 (Introduction to Phonetics and Phonology), LING 1002 (Introduction to Morphology and Syntax), and any introductory course on language.  All other UWI courses have the prerequisite courses listed here: http://sta.uwi.edu/resources/documents/facultybooklets/HumanitiesUndergrad.pdf.

What is the duration of the courses offered at CLLI?

Each course lasts six (6) weeks.

What kind of accreditation will I receive upon completion of CLLI?

Each undegraduate course is worth three (3) UWI credits and each postgraduate course is worth four (4) UWI credits.  This applies only to students reading the courses for credit towards a degree programme, not for those auditing the courses for personal interest.

Do I have to attend daily classes?

Classes will take place from Monday to Thursday (3 hours a day for linguistics courses and 5 hours a day for language courses).  Friday is reserved for library and field research as well as special workshops, seminars and guest lectures.

When may I enrol for a course at CLLI?

You may enrol now!  The deadline for preliminary applications is 1 March 2010.  (Although applications will be accepted after 1 March 2010, there is, however, no guarantee of course or housing availability after this date.)

Can I enrol online?

Yes, all enrolments take place online.

How do I enrol online?

There are two parts to the enrolment and application process.
1) The first part is the CLLI APPLICATION Form, here: http://clli.centre.uwi.edu/registration.  This is to reserve your place in your courses of choice and on hall.
2) The second part (for non-UWI, St Augustine students) is the UWI, St Augustine REGISTRATION.  For non-St Augustine students from other campuses outside of T&T, this assists with immigration matters and all other administrative matters.  All non-St Augustine UWI students need to register on their own campuses before proceeding to St Augustine.  For non-UWI students, this is to ensure that you are a registered student with a UWI ID number.

What facilities are available on campus?

Click here for an overview of all facilities at the St Augustine campus.  Click here for the website of the Main Library.

Are there facilities to accommodate a disabled person?

Yes, there are.  Disabled persons are catered to specially through the UWI Office of Special Students Services.  Our preliminary application form asks applicants to describe their special needs.

Do you offer on-campus accommodation?

Yes, all students will be housed on campus.  CLLI 2010 cannot assist in locating off-campus accommodation.

What is the cost of the entire programme (including accommodation)?

UWI students from St Augustine pay per credit.  Those students wishing to do so should request on-campus accommodation when applying to CLLI.  UWI students from Cave Hill and Mona pay for tuition (depending on the number of courses read for credit), accommodation and most meals.  International students pay for tuition, accommodation and meals.

UWI students who are sponsored by the governments of contributing CARICOM territories pay per course (for credit), but may also audit courses for their interest.  International students (from non-contributing CARICOM or other territories) can pay for courses for credit or for auditing.

Check out the breakdown here: http://clli.centre.uwi.edu/tuition-and-housing.

What is the cost per course?

One 3-credit course costs US$190 for UWI students.  More information to follow.

Are scholarships or other funding available?

All students pay for their tuition.  However, there are a limited number of Caribbean Integration Scholarships funded by The University of the West Indies to assist students from other campuses to get to St Augustine.  These scholarships  cover airfare, accommodation and a 50% meal subsidy.  To be eligible for these, candidates must satisfy the following criterion: be a registered student of the Cave Hill, Mona, Open or  campuses.   Applicants must FULLY register for the Caribbean Language and Linguistics Institute 2010 by 1 March 2010.  This entails completing Part 1: completing the CLLI 2010 online pre-registration and application form, AND Part 2: submission of the Special Admissions UWI St Augustine registration form, sent directly to the CLLI Secretariat (clli.uwi.2010@gmail.com or clli2010@sta.uwi.edu).  Notifications will be sent out by 22 May 2010 confirming funding.  Once a student has qualified for a Caribbean Integration Scholarship, s/he must pay tuition fees within a week to guarantee receipt of the scholarship. In addition, UWI students should contact their respective departments on their campuses for information on scholarships, jobs and other funding opportunities.

CLLI 2010 is unfortunately unable to offer funding for non-UWI students.

Can I make payments online and what are the payment options?

CLLI attendees can eventually use the University's ecommerce facility to pay for courses online using their UWI I.D. numbers.  At the moment, however, this option is not available.  Students also have the option of paying their fees upon arrival at the UWI, St Augustine campus at the Cashier on the ground floor of the Student Administration Building.
